Each entry is on 9" x 12" (23 cm x 30.5 cm) 90 lb. sketchbook paper. The entries are loose in a custom-made brown cardstock box with some more of the Sailor Jerry tissue paper (as seen in my journal) covering the lid.
The topic I chose for my visual journal was body modification. I wanted to document basic mods including tattooing, piercing, suspension, scarification, corsetry, plastic surgery, and hair cutting and dyeing. I also wanted to explore Eastern and Western points of view on body modification and challenge the viewer’s perspective of what is considered normal or acceptable by society’s standards. I appropriated a lot of imagery from found objects, photographs from the Internet and magazines, sketches from my tattoo artist, business cards from 3062 and Adambomb, and miscellaneous things from Sailor Jerry orders. I also wanted to focus on experimenting with various mixed media.
